Abstract:

Introduction: According to literature regarding relationship between religious orientations with psychological well-being, it is supposed that the distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic orientations toward religion may prove useful in understanding the relationship between religiosity and death obsession. The present study aimed to examine the relationship between religious orientations with death obsession according to sex role. Method: The current study was conducted in correlative context. Subjects (n=468) were selected through random stratified sampling and the Death Obsession and Religious Orientation Scales were administered. Data was analyzed using synchronic multivariate regression method. Results: Results showed that the relationship between death obsessions with extrinsic orientation toward religion is positive in both sexes; whereas death obsession has a negative relation with intrinsic orientation toward religion. Results of regression analysis also indicated that the extrinsic religious orientations in women predict death obsession with greater power. Conclusion: Because there is negative relationship between intrinsic religious orientations with death obsession, it can be concluded that religious immaturity causes pathological attitudes toward death. The role of gender differences is significant.

Abstract:

Background: Death anxiety and obsession are human tensions that routinely present in nursing. The sense of humor is also associated with obsession and anxiety. Objectives: Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the level of death anxiety, death obsession, and sense of humor among nurses working in medical-surgical wards and intensive care units in Iran. This is a descriptive-analytical study. Methods: The research population comprised 240 nurses working in intensive care units and medical-surgical departments in Kerman. The research instrument was composed of a demographic questionnaire, death obsession scale (DOS), Templer death anxiety scale (TDAS), and humor styles questionnaire (HSQ). Results: The mean scores of nurse’ s death anxiety in intensive care units and medical-surgical wards were 7. 46 3. 43 and 5. 46 2. 84, respectively. The mean scores of death obsession in intensive care units and medical-surgical wards were 30. 47 11. 17 and 26. 38 11. 67, respectively. The mean scores of the sense of humor in the two groups were 117. 37 21. 31 and 109. 56 23. 47, respectively. The mean scores of death anxiety, death obsession, and sense of humor among nurses were significantly higher in intensive care units than in medical-surgical wards (P < 0. 05). Conclusions: It is necessary to determine the sources of death anxiety and obsession and strengthen the sense of humor in nurses to provide better healthcare.

Abstract:

Introduction The present study was conducted with the aim of predicting death obsession based on anxiety sensitivity, mindfulness and psychological toughness in people with type 2 diabetes. Material and Method The current descriptive-correlation study and the statistical population included men and women with type 2 diabetes in Tehran between May and November 2022, from which 134 people were selected by convenience sampling. The data were obtained using the death obsession scale of Abdul Khaliq (1998), the anxiety sensitivity questionnaire (ASI) of Reiss and Patterson (1985), the FFMQ mindfulness questionnaire of Bayer et al. (2006) and the psychological toughness scale of Ahvaz Kiamarthi et al. Came. The data obtained from the implementation of the research were analyzed using the methods of descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (correlation matrix) as well as the analysis of the raw data obtained from the research in the software (SPSS). Results The results showed that the variable of anxiety sensitivity has a direct effect on death anxiety (0. 735), the variable of psychological toughness has an inverse effect on the variable of death anxiety (-0. 251), and the variable of mindfulness has an inverse effect on the anxiety variable. Death has an effect (-0. 219). Conclusion It can be concluded that death anxiety can be predicted based on anxiety sensitivity, psychological toughness, and mindfulness, and anxiety sensitivity, psychological toughness, and mindfulness variables are predictors for death anxiety.

Abstract:

Obsessions are recurrent, persistent and intrusive thoughts, phobias, images and impulses. Patients persistently try to exclude them, but as they try more, the result doesn’t be satisfactory. In this presentation we are going to present an obsessive patient who was obsessed regarding using addictive substances. Represented case is a 27 year’s old married man with no previous history of cigarette and any substance abuse or dependence. He referred to our OPD clinic in Kerman Psychiatric Hospital (Iran}. He had recurrent and intrusive thoughts which made him anxious and reported social function problems due to his thoughts. His obsessive thoughts began when he was eighteen at that time he continuously obsessed about smoking cigarette, but when was offered one by one of his friends, he scared and destroyed it. A few years later he had recurrent obsessive thoughts a bout using marijuana, opium and the pleasure which could be occurred then after. Since a year before his referral he had the same thought about heroin. Other than this obsessive thought, he believed in magic and referred to faith healers several times. He also thought, he should sell his properties and spend the income for buying opium and heroin. This thought decreased obviously after taking 200mg fluvoxamine during four weeks. We concluded that addiction obsession could bed separate type of obsession. It could be a variant of obsessive impulses.

Abstract:

Introduction: Breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women with an increasing outbreak. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between defensive styles and Islamic quality of life (QoL) with death obsession in women with breast cancer. Methods: This research was a correlational study. The statistical population of the study included 220 female patients with breast cancer; referring to Cancer Patients Association of Gorgan in 2019. According to Krejcie and Morgan’ s table, 136 women were selected from breast cancer patients by simple random sampling. Islamic QoL questionnaire of Mohammad Namaqi et al., defense styles questionnaire of Andrews et al., and obsession with death questionnaire of Abdel-Khalek were applied. Data were analyzed; using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Pearson correlation, and stepwise regression. Results: The results showed that there was a negative significant relationship between the developed defensive style and the Islamic QoL with death obsession (P=0. 001). There was a positive significant relationship between the neurotic and undeveloped defensive style with the death obsession (P=0. 001). In addition, the results of the regression showed that the Islamic QoL (-0. 257) and developed defensive style (-0. 196) had the potential for predicting the obsession of death. Conclusions: These results emphasize the necessity of the role defensive styles and Islamic QoL on the death obsession. So, therapists and counseling in the treatment of cancer for reducing obsession may benefit from paying attention to Islamic QoL and defensive styles.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to examine the moderating role of coping styles in the relationship between attachment styles and obsession death in the elderly. Three hundred and twenty six elderly people (185 males, 141 females) were selected from Noorabad Mamasani, Iran by convenient sampling. The participants completed the Adult Attachment Style Questionnaire (Hazan & Shaver, 1987), the Coping Styles Questionnaire (Park, 2007) and the Death Obsession Scale (Abdel-khalek, 1998). The data analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and multivariate regression. The results indicated that secure attachment style and positive coping style related to obsession death significantly and negatively. The insecure attachment styles and negative coping style related to obsession death significantly and c positive The. positivelyoping style predicted lower scores in obsession death. The positive coping style moderated the relationship between attachment styles and obsession death. The findings suggested that increasing level of positive coping style weakened the relationship between insecure attachment styles and obsession death.

Abstract:

Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is clinically, cytogenetically, and molecularly heterogeneous. Advances in molecular research have greatly improved our understanding of the leukemogenesis in AML. Programmed cell death-4 (PDCD4) is a novel tumor suppressor that inhibits neoplastic transformation and tumor progression and invasion by suppressing activator protein (AP) -1 activation and protein translation. In the present study, we examined the PDCD4 expression levels in de novo AML and investigated correlation between altered expression of PDCD4 with patients’ clinical characteristics. Methods: Peripheral blood samples were collected from 56 patients with AML at the time of diagnosis and also, 10 healthy individuals. Quantification of PDCD4 mRNA expression by Real Time Quantitative PCR was performed. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare PDCD4 expression differences among healthy and AML samples.Findings: PDCD4 mRNA expression was significantly diminished in patients with AML at diagnosis in comparison to the PB as normal samples (P<0.001). We observed a statistically lower expression in AML-M5 subtype in comparison to other AML subtypes (P=0.028). We have not found any significant correlation between PDCD4 expression level and clinical parameters of patients. Also, no significant correlation between the expression levels of PDCD4 and complete remission after induction therapy was observed. Conclusion: Our results shown that, like many epithelial cancers, the down-regulation of PDCD4 expression also occurs in AML.
